Trees add shade, beauty and value to any property. But when a tree becomes weak, diseased or damaged, it can turn into a real risk for your home, your vehicles and your family. The problem is that many warning signs are easy to miss until it's too late.

Here are 7 signs that it may be time to call a professional.

1. The Tree Is Leaning Suddenly

Some trees grow with a natural lean. But if a tree starts leaning more over time, or the soil around its base is cracked or lifting, the roots may be failing. This is one of the most serious warning signs.

2. Dead or Falling Branches

Large dead branches, sometimes called "widowmakers," can fall without warning, especially during wind or storms. If you see many dead limbs in the canopy, the tree may be in decline.

3. Cracks or Splits in the Trunk

Deep cracks, splits or cavities in the trunk weaken the tree's structure. A tree with a split trunk, especially a double trunk with a weak joint, can break apart under stress.

4. Mushrooms or Fungus at the Base

Fungus growing at the base of a tree or on its roots often means internal rot. The tree may look healthy on the outside while decaying on the inside.

5. Missing Bark or Hollow Spots

Bark protects the tree. Large areas of missing bark, soft wood or hollow sections are signs that the tree is losing strength.

6. The Tree Is Too Close to Your Home or Power Lines

Even a healthy tree can become a problem if it grows too close to your roof, foundation, driveway or power lines. Roots can damage structures, and branches can cause serious damage in a storm.

7. Pest Damage

Small holes in the bark, sawdust around the base or thinning leaves can point to insects like bark beetles. Some infestations spread quickly to nearby trees.

What Should You Do?
